Headroom Sessions

“All great deeds and all great thoughts have a ridiculous beginning. Great works are often born on a street corner or in a restaurant’s revolving door.” —Albert Camus

Head Room Sessions was born from a seemingly fated series of small, striking moment of inspiration in an art gallery.

Musician and gallery coordinator Matt Shaw couldn’t help but whistle every time he walked through the head room of Recreative Denver. Its high ceilings, cement floors, and open space made for the perfect sound projection.

Eventually, he invited a few friends to the head room to jam. His love for the room and the talent that surrounded him only grew, and thus began Head Room Sessions.

Now the team consists of Matt, audio engineer Will Kilduff aka Grampa Boots long time music curator Elle Naef and a rotation of some of Denver’s best new entertainment photographers.

Each session features two local musicians from two different genres. Performers receive three video recordings, tracks, and a professional photo shoot.

Subtle details make for creative bonuses for more than just the musicians, as a new visual artist is featured in the background of each session and photographers end up with plenty of future shoot opportunities.

They’re open to the public and provide an enriching and entertaining experience in which attendees not only get a behind-the-scenes look at the production process, but they also discover musicians they may never have seen otherwise and make new connections with other community members with an appreciation for the arts.

150 musicians, 450 tracks, and 7 photographers later the dream continues to grow. We intend to keep Head Room Sessions a reliable source for Denver creatives to network, create content, and gain exposure.

Having worked in local arts for a while now, though, we know that exposure and networking are not  sufficient payment on their own.

All donations will go to the growth and development of our program with the goal of providing a source of financial means for Denver creatives through:

  • A monthly membership program
  • Grant applications
  • Fundraising events
  • Marketing materials
  • Equipment maintenance

We invite you to join us for a session and watch the magic unfold for yourself.
